EAST ELMHURST, Queens (WABC) — One person died and several others were injured in a house fire in Queens.
Officials say heavy flames engulfed a home on 89th Street in East Elmhurst around 11 p.m. Friday.
When firefighters extinguished the fire, they found a man in his 60s unconscious on the second floor. He was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Some of the other residents were taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Residents say that the cause of the fire could have been an electric scooter.
“I turned off the scooter, I was on the first floor. As I was putting the cereal in the bowl, I heard an explosion that sounded like a gunshot. As I opened the door to the second floor, those stairs were already on fire in seconds. It was a disaster,” Jose Corona said.
Firefighters did pull the burned scooter out of the house, but the official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
At least one firefighter also suffered minor injuries during the incident.
