An Immokalee high school teacher who had sex with young girls will spend the summer in jail. Travis Westbury was arrested last year for touching one student and sending naked another.
Westbury was to become the ruling voice. He was the coach of the youth basketball team and the teacher of young minds.
Instead, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office alleges he abused that authority by sending nude photos to minors, inappropriately touching students and harassing.
He was arrested in March 2021. On Monday, he pleaded not guilty to disputing allegations of transmitting harmful information to a child through an electronic device and battery.
Instead of facing five years for each of the three crimes he was charged with, Westbury will serve only 18 months. He is credited with 13.5 months, which he has already served, leaving 4.5 months behind bars.
While this saved him from as much imprisonment as possible, it also saves his victims, all under the age of 16, from testifying in court.
When he agreed with his fate before the judge, Westbury showed little emotion, only answering questions yes or no.
Once he is released, Westbury will serve a 3.5-year probation period and will have to register as a sex offender.
