A man who dropped his gun while running from police was arrested when he returned to look for it, California authorities said.

If police officers tried to stop the driver After he ran a stop sign at Lake Street and 19th Street in San Pablo on Friday, Sept. 30, he fled, according to the San Pablo Police Department on Facebook.

The man threw what police later determined was a gun out of the car during the chase, the report said.

“The chase continued and the driver eventually eluded capture,” the report said.

Later that evening, when officers were responding to an “unrelated alarm,” they observed someone “looking under the cars” with a flashlight at “the very spot where the gun was thrown,” police said.

The “registered owner of the getaway vehicle” returned to look for the gun that had been thrown, San Pablo police said.

“The suspect was arrested and transported to the county jail without charge,” the report said.

McClatchy News has reached out to police to clarify what charges the man is facing.

San Pablo is about 20 miles northeast of San Francisco.
