FORT MYERS BEACH
Thanks to a new temporary post office, Fort Myers Beach residents will finally be able to send and receive mail directly from the island after nearly four months of driving out of the way to do so.
People in Fort Myers Beach had to drive miles to Page Field, the post office on Airport Road, just to mail a letter, pick up flyers or bills. Starting Monday, a temporary facility in the Fort Myers Beach Post Office parking lot will allow all customers in the 33931 and 33932 zip codes to pick up their mail and packages.
This temporary post office will offer retail services and mailboxes, as well as mail and package delivery. Those who had a mailbox at the previous post office can get a new key by showing photo ID and your mailbox number will remain the same. Postal services are currently determining where it is safe to resume residential and business mail delivery. Until then, people will have to come to the parking lot.
Jim Atterholt, Fort Myers Beach’s vice mayor, spoke to WINK News about the island’s future.
“There is tremendous optimism as we move forward into the future,” Atterholt said. “We’re hearing so many really exciting rebuilding plans and so many people are working hard to rebuild their lives. And I just think … I’m just very optimistic about the future of Fort Myers Beach.”
The temporary post office will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. it will also be open on Saturday at the same hours, but retail services will not be available. It will be closed on Sunday.
According to Atterholt, having to go to Page Field for the mail was “a great inconvenience.” “And immediately after the storm, I understood why they did it. But we needed to get our place back on the island as soon as possible.”
