SAN FRANCISCO – An Air India plane that had to make an emergency landing in Russia finally reached San Francisco, where emotional encounters took place early Thursday morning.
It was a relief for passengers and their families as the flight arrived at SFO just after midnight.
Air India has confirmed that it will provide a full refund to all those affected. They will also issue vouchers for future travel with Air India.
This happened after an emergency landing at Russia’s Magadan airport due to engine failure.
Air India Flight 173 took off from Delhi on Tuesday and was scheduled to land at SFO the same day.
The location of the emergency landing not only put passengers in a remote part of the country, but also caused great concern amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Passengers then began posting photos and videos of the berths and their accommodations on social media, all showing varying degrees of discomfort.
However, some travelers describe the very good attitude of both Air India and the Russian authorities.
Families with passengers on board explained how their loved ones survived the unexpected stop.
ABC7 News caught up with the passengers after they landed safely at SFO.
“They took us to a school near the airport and we stayed there,” Alina Shah said. “The Russians were kind, they gave us food, they took care of us. But we were traumatized. We didn’t know how long it would take, and it’s Russia, so we were a little worried about it. But the fact is that we are here now. WE are safe and we are grateful for that.”
Passengers said many of the 216 on board were helping each other as they waited for an Air India ferry to reach them in Russia and complete their journey.
Family members with relatives on board say they all believe the experience created a bond between most of the passengers.
