NEW YORK (WABC) – Catholic dioceses in New York and New Jersey grant special permission allowing parishioners to eat meat on St. Patrick’s Daywhich falls on a Friday this year.
Corned beef and other types of meat are the main products of the holiday. But Catholics should not eat meat on Fridays during Lent to commemorate Jesus’ death on the cross.
The archdioceses of New York, Brooklyn and Rockville Center are among dozens of other US dioceses that have taken a similar stance.
All New Jersey dioceses also make an exception.
A survey by the National Catholic Register newspaper found that of the 137 dioceses that responded, 105 offered some kind of assistance.
– 80 say that they offer a direct refusal.
– 25 offer a “substitution” that requires Catholics to substitute another penance if they plan to eat meat this Friday.
– 32 remain with the original requirement to abstain from meat on Fridays.
