My health journey

Last year I wrote an article about my journey to being as healthy as possible and using preventative measures to avoid health problems as I age. I have continued this journey because I really enjoy being a (Nonna) grandma, and this year I will not only be a Nonna to Brennan D’Uva, but to another D’Uva boy in Cincinnati.

Health to my roles

I continue to see my internist every two years, have routine blood work and annual mammograms, not to mention all the tests my doctors recommend to keep me in good health. My health is important not only in my role as Nona, but also as the President/CEO of the company West Orange Chamber. I must be in good physical and mental health to continue my service to the society that governs it Chamber and as vice president of the MetroWest Master Association.

Also, I need to be in good health to volunteer at Shepherd’s Hope, the American Diabetes Association and continue another West Orange Habitat for Humanity project for Women’s Build. It definitely took a toll on my physical and mental health as they allowed me to use a miter saw. As is Westly’s Healthy Selfie 5K with the Chamber team.

Living in a healthy community

I am able to do all of this because I am fortunate enough to have access to medical care to take care of my mind and body. I’m also lucky enough to live in a community and say it’s conducive to being active in keeping the mind and body healthy. As many of you know, I enjoy cycling. This is a time that usually allows me to focus solely on cycling and enjoying the scenery. I also have other more sedentary hobbies. I like to read and listen to books. These are the moments that allow my brain to rest and regroup, find peace.

We all have different ways of balancing work life and home life. In addition to driving and reading, I really enjoy just hanging out with close friends in a small company. This often involves eating well and drinking responsibly, and West Orange certainly has plenty of places to indulge this hobby of mine.
