A shooting at a packed Martin Luther King Day party in Florida on Monday night that left eight people injured was the 30th mass shooting in the United States this year, the agency said. Archive of gun violence.

Authorities said one person was critically injured after a shooting at an event in Fort Pierce. Seven others were also shot and wounded, and at least four more were injured in the panic.

“By the time the shots rang out, people were just running in all directions,” Brian Hester, a senior sheriff’s deputy, said at the briefing.

“People were lying behind cars, lying behind anything that could be pawned. At that point it was hard to tell who was the victim and who was just hiding.”

The MLK Day Party at Ilus Ellis City Park was billed as a family-friendly event with a DJ and live music, dance numbers, a car show and children’s activities. Cell phone video taken by a witness shows families dancing outside their cars as gunshots ring out, then parents grabbing their children’s arms and scrambling to safety.

Hester said the shooting happened after an argument between two groups. He added that during the most recent mass shooting in the United States, which is defined as a shooting in which at least four people, not including the attackers, were killed or injured.

“So many innocent people who were hurt or injured were not part of the dispute,” he said.

“It is very unfortunate and sad that during the celebration of someone who represents peace and equality, disagreements lead to the use of weapons and violence.”

The Florida shooting came hours after a 17-year-old woman and her six-month-old baby were among six died Monday in another mass shooting in Goshen, California.

Officials there suspect the “horrific carnage” in the early hours was related to drug cartel activity after a search of the residence of deputies executing a drug warrant last week.

“We believe that this was not a random act of violence. We believe this was a targeted family,” local Sheriff Mike Boudreau told reporters.

Boudreau said deputies were called to the residence around 3:30 a.m. Monday and found two victims dead outside and four more inside the home. Among them was a man who was still alive but later died in hospital. Several survivors were removed from the home, the sheriff said.

Goshen is a semi-rural community of about 3,000 residents located 35 miles southeast of Fresno in the agricultural San Joaquin Valley. Boudreau said gang violence is not uncommon in the area, but that the massacre targeting the infant showed a heartless level of brutality.

At least 1,943 people have died in the US as a result of gun violence this year. Of those killed, 88 were 17 years of age or younger, and another 187 minors were wounded, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

The latest shootings come as gun reform advocates fear the new Republican majority in the House of Representatives will try to stop the progress made as a result of Joe Biden’s signing last summer of a bipartisan bill tightening restrictions on firearms after the massacres in Uwald, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.

Even if Senate Democrats succeed in passing additional gun regulations, House Speaker-elect Kevin McCarthy, a Republican, will be able to block those bills from a vote in the lower chamber.

“I really think there’s still an opportunity, even though the House is obviously under Republican control right now,” Zeenat Yahya, policy director for the gun safety group March for Our Lives, told the Guardian.

“We want to make sure that gun violence prevention remains at the forefront of the conversation, and we play an active role at the federal level.”
