After capturing the audience with the first season with “BMF“, the dramatized retelling of how two Detroit brothers (Demetrius “Big Mitch” and Terry “Southwest” Flenory) created one of America’s most notorious and powerful crime families, Starz gives the real-life story a documentary treatment.
The BMF Documentary: Blowing Money Fast follows the epic rise and fall of the infamous Black Mafia family, also known as the vast empire that rose from the streets of Detroit to form one of the most notorious drug-trafficking networks in the country. With stories from associates, insiders, members of the Flenory family and celebrities, the eight-part documentary covers the full arc of the Black Mafia Family’s history that we have yet to hear directly from direct sources.
Leading to “BMF”. the second seasonwhere Big Mitch’s son is filmed Demetrius “Lil Mitch” Flenory Jrstarring himself and premiering in January, Starz is releasing half-hour episodes of the documentary that will take viewers through the early days of the Flenory brothers in Detroit, the heyday of the Black Mafia Family in the early ’80s, their peak in the late ’90s, and their fall in 2006. The documentary series also includes updates on where the organization and some of its key players stand today — including Big Mitch, who comments on the documentary as he continues to serve his 30-year sentence in an Oregon state prison.
Mitch and Terry were both arrested by the DEA in 2007 for the organization’s drug operations. In June 2021 Detroit News reported that a federal judge reduced Mitch’s sentence by three years, so he is expected to be released sometime in 2028. Terry, who also received a 30-year sentence, was released to home detention in 2020 as part of a broader effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
So far, the Starz drama “BMF” has only scratched the surface of the story of a black mafia family, as the second season is expected to finally touch on the organization’s expansion into Atlanta. But if you can’t wait for the theatrical series to return in 2023, read on for all the new revelations we learned from the BMF Documentary.
