NEW JERSEY (WABC) – Small businesses along the Jersey coast are starting to open stores in the summer, but finding enough seasonal staff has proved difficult.

“Terrible.” This is how Ava Akunevich, who owns the Ocean Grove Bake Shoppe, describes the time she had in search of new employees.

“We posted, they call, sign up, and no one appears,” – said Akunevich.

Akunevich said it was at least a dozen times.

She has been at the center of Ocean Grove for 17 years and pays much higher than the current minimum wage of $ 15 an hour.

Bruce Vinland, owner of Weaser’s Ices, lives the same nightmare.

“No one is applying,” Vinland said. “To run all these trucks, I probably need 16 around the summer.”

Vinland has owned Weaser’s for 40 years. On the wall of his office he has photos of his favorite employees from 1997. Many of them became lawyers and doctors or successful businessmen.

“It was always a push that people liked, it was,‘ I work four days a week, I work four 10-hour days, and I’m good for a week, and I get three days off to play, ’” Windland said.

Also increasing is the weekly summer rent available for beach holidays this summer. This can help small businesses generate the necessary cash flow after rent.

Anyone interested in a beach holiday should check out local listings and smaller programs to save money on fees and taxes that are charged when booking through major online companies.

“Because of the surplus you will be able to find it at a reasonable price,” said Jacob Smith of Ward Wight Sotheby’s Realty. “(They take) planes or go to other cities or do things they haven’t been able to do the last two or three years.”

Smith said the increase in rents along the coast may be due to the large number of people traveling outside the state for the summer.

Smith advised travelers to be flexible about the dates and cities they watch.
