TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Police officers in a Florida park fatally shot an armed woman who “laid in wait” for them while they searched for a suspect in a drug investigation, officials said.
The shooting happened at Tom Brown Park in Tallahassee around 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Police responded to the park after receiving a report that the person they were looking for, a man, had been spotted there, according to a department news release Friday.
Officers and a deputy from the Leon County Sheriff’s Office were in the park when the woman “ambushed law enforcement officers and opened fire on them,” the department said. The officers and deputy returned fire and she was wounded. She was taken to the hospital, where she died.
Police officers were not injured, there is no threat to public safety, the report says.
A police department spokesman said a suspect in a drug investigation was taken into custody at the park, according to the Tallahassee Democrat. It was not immediately clear whether there was a relationship between the man and the woman.
