ARLANDA, FL – Orange County MPs say former NBA player Adrian Payne was killed in Orlando early Monday morning.

The man who allegedly pulled the trigger was detained.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says it happened just before 1:30 a.m. on Egret Shores Drive.

He was taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Initially, investigators were unable to confirm the identity of the victim. The sheriff’s office confirmed on Monday afternoon Orlando Fox Branch that 31-year-old Payne was the victim.

Lawrence Dority, 29, reportedly remained at the scene and was taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning. He was then arrested on a first-degree murder warrant and taken to Orange County Jail.

Payne grew up in Dayton, Ohio, and played for the Spartans from 2010 to 2014. After the 2014 season, he was the winner of the second team of the entire Big Ten.

Payne was selected as the No. 15 overall in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks and spent time with the Atlanta and Minnesota.

On August 21, 2017, Payne signed a bilateral contract with Orlando Magic. He spent most of the 2017–2018 season at the NBA G League branch of Orlando, Lakeland Magic.

He then went on to play basketball in Greece, China and most recently played in Lithuania.
