FORT MYERS
Police Chief Derrick Diggs has died, according to the Fort Myers Police Department.
FMPD released the following Facebook Wednesday morning:
“On behalf of Acting Chief Pepitone and the entire Fort Myers Police Department family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Police Chief Derrick Diggs.”
Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marcena said in a Facebook post“In his 46 years as a law enforcement officer in Ohio and Florida, he put his service before himself and dedicated his life to those he swore to protect.”
In July 2022, Diggs continued family medical leave. Back in December, FMPD said it planned to return to work in April.
There is no word yet on what caused Diggs’ death.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
