U Corporate social responsibility and a rational environment Analyzing 351 Chinese firms in highly polluting industries from 2006 to 2019, researchers found that companies with female executives tended to adopt policies that support environmental sustainability, such as reducing waste, minimizing consumption, and protecting and preserving wildlife and natural habitats.

The researchers also examined the moderating effect of the proportion of female directors on the board of directors. They found that the presence of such “group members” strengthened the relationship between female managers and corporate environmental policies.

“There’s an old saying in China: ‘Women hold up half the sky.’ This paper really supports this view by highlighting the power of women executives in corporate environmental policy,” said corresponding author Ying Zhang, Ph.D. from Northwest Polytechnic University in China. “This paper can help policymakers and board members in developing appropriate legislation to advance women into corporate leadership positions to ensure social and environmental benefits for stakeholders and society.”
