NEW YORK (WABC) – Applications are now open for the National Puerto Rican Parade Day Scholarship Program.

Each year, the National Puerto Rican Parade awards 100 scholarships of $2,000 each for a total of $200,000 to outstanding students of Puerto Rican descent who are making a difference in their communities.

Thanks in large part to the generosity of many companies, organizations and individuals who invest in parade events and make direct donations to the organization, NPRDP has awarded more than $1.2 million in scholarships to deserving Puerto Rican students seeking higher education.

To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be of Puerto Rican descent.
  • Have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher, or high school equivalent;
  • Be a high school graduate or college freshman between the ages of 17 and 25;
  • Enroll in an accredited two- or four-year undergraduate college/university;
  • Have a track record of volunteering or community service;
  • Attend an interview with a member(s) of the scholarship selection committee.
  • Scholarship winners from previous years are eligible to reapply if they still meet the above criteria.
