RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA – Actor Julian Sands, star of several Oscar-nominated films including “A Room With a View,” has been missing for five days in the mountains of Southern California where he was hiking, authorities said Wednesday.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Gloria Huerta said Sands, 65, went missing Friday on a trailhead on Baldy Mountain.

Search and rescue officials were looking for Sands in the San Gabriel Mountains, about 40 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, but were forced to suspend the ground search Saturday because of trail conditions and the risk of avalanches, and have not been active since then. were able to restore, – Huerta said.

They are searching for Sands as weather permits using helicopters and drones, and will resume the ground search when it is safe to do so, authorities said.

The latest in a series of storms that have created dangerous mountain conditions hit Southern California on Friday and continued into the weekend. Two other tourists recently died in the area.

Representatives for Sands, an English-born actor who now lives in North Hollywood, did not immediately respond to emails seeking comment or additional information.

Sands starred opposite Helena Bonham Carter in the 1985 British romance A Room with a View, directed by James Ivory.

He also starred in The Wizard (1989), Arachnophobia (1990), Naked Lunch (1991), Helena Bonham (1993) and Leaving Las Vegas (1995).

Since then, Sands has consistently worked in smaller film and television roles.

Meanwhile, a separate search continues in Los Angeles County for another hiker named Bob Gregory.

Gregory, of Hawthorne, was reported missing by his family on Monday afternoon. They were looking for him in the Crystal Lake area of ​​the San Gabriel Mountains, according to the Los Angeles County San Dimas Sheriff’s Station.

The family say they are distraught and fear he may have injured himself and fallen. They added that the police are tracking his mobile phone.

On Tuesday, search teams combed the area on the ground and from the air. However, those efforts were limited to crews Wednesday because of ice in the difficult terrain, authorities said.
