Kelly’s machine gun draws on his real-life experiences to play a jaded rock star struggling with addiction and the crushing pressures of fame. The star, who goes by his real name Colson Baker in the film’s credits, has been very open about his struggles with addiction and past fame, describing them in his documentary “Life in pink.” Now, in Taurus, on which he also served as executive producer, composer and script consultant, he dramatizes his story by delving into a new character whose experiences seem both similar to his own and universal to the tortured rock star archetype.
“This is my 14th or 15th movie, but this movie is very close to my heart,” Kelly told the crowd after being honored at Variety’s Newport Beach Film Festival Honors Brunch on Oct. 16 for Cinematographer. “This is about the last week that the musician has been alive, and he’s just trying to struggle between good and good — just trying to find the good in himself. And I feel that way often. I always get asked what it’s like to be a musician, but I feel like I’m walking into a toy store and just looking at a toy in a box. Like I don’t want to be in a box. I want you to take the toy out of the box and try what the toy does.’
Kelly added that he hopes his performance will help people take him more seriously as an actor. “There are roles that I say I want or dream about scripts that when they come along I’m like, ‘Oh, I’d love that,’ and I’m often laughed at because the director isn’t like, ‘I don’t know, who I am, or the studios don’t believe I can handle it,” he said. “But this is one step towards showing them what I can do.”
