A man was shot and killed by police after stealing jewelry and stabbing a female store clerk at a mall, according to Georgia police.

The man, identified as a 27-year-old Loganville man, entered the Macy’s at the Mall of Georgia around 11 a.m. on Sept. 2 and began smashing through the jewelry boxes, the Gwinnett Police Department said in a statement. When a store employee tried to stop him from taking the jewelry, the man stabbed the employee, causing him to suffer life-threatening injuries.

After stabbing the worker, the man ran out of the store and tried to flee in a gray pickup truck, police said.

Police found the truck near the mall, the department said in a statement. The officer tried to stop the man by crashing into the truck, after which the man tried to flee on foot, authorities said.

As the man fled, the officer shot him at least once, police said. As of September 2, he is in stable condition at the hospital.

“Our officers made a determined stop on the suspect at that point because this is a high traffic area and Reyes was an immediate threat to public safety,” Gwinnett police said in a news release.

A Macy’s worker was also hospitalized with serious injuries, the release said.
