The man who was driving the stolen car died ran a red light while fleeing from officers and crashed into another vehicle, according to North Carolina State Police.

A Hickory police officer spotted a stolen Honda Accord around 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, and attempted a traffic stop, according to the department. However, police said the vehicle refused to stop and instead fled toward the intersection of Springs Road and McDonald Parkway.

As the stolen car approached an intersection, it ran a red light and collided with a Jeep Wrangler carrying four teenagers between the ages of 15 and 17, the department said. The Jeep overturned on its side, hitting a third vehicle.

Police say all four occupants of the Jeep were injured. Three teenagers were discharged from the hospital on the morning of Thursday, October 6. The fourth remained in the hospital in a stable condition. The driver of the third car was not injured.

The driver of the Honda, identified as 30-year-old Bradley Michael Swink, was ejected from the vehicle in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Police say Swink, who is from Clermont, was held on multiple bonds and faced several outstanding warrants for his arrest on charges including habitual felony, assault with a deadly weapon, concealed weapon, vehicle theft, possession of methamphetamine, habitual theft, driving while impaired and common law robbery.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Hickory is about 60 miles northwest of Charlotte.
