A man met officers with a gun, ran into the house and came out to tell them his wife was dying, California police said.

When officers arrived at a Gilroy home shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, for a 911 call, they found a 72-year-old man standing in the doorway with a gun pointed at them, California authorities said. .

Man, Steve Rabena, “fled back to the house” on Glenview Drive as officers took the position, the Gilroy Police Department said Thursday, Oct. 6, in a Facebook post.

He appeared for a moment to say that “his wife was dying in the house,” the report said.

“Officers were able to detain Rabena with a K9 as he called for officers to ‘shoot’ him,” the report said.

After Rabena was arrested, police turned their attention to his 82-year-old wife, who had “life-threatening injuries.”

The woman was taken to the hospital “but is expected to survive,” police said.

Police said they found a gun in the home, adding that “it is believed a blunt object was used to injure the woman.”

Rabena was jailed on multiple charges, including attempted murder and domestic violence, according to police.

Gilroy is about 85 miles southeast of San Francisco.
