NEW YORK (WABC) – New York celebrated Earth Day in a big way.
Students from Pennsylvania’s Wolf Pack Performing Arts Center traveled to the Big Apple to join the Broadway Green Alliance and take part in a free Earth Day Broadway concert in Times Square.
“Using songs that incorporate the elements, we’re singing about rain,” said Kathy Bowman, one of the students.
“Our other friend sings ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,'” added Lauren Hannelly.
The concert brought together performers for a free show and delivered a message about protecting the earth.
“They sing the kind of songs that give hope and joy,” said Broadway Green Alliance director Molly Braverman. “We bring people together and bring sustainability and community.”
The city also joined in the Earth Day celebration by closing down streets to help promote a car-free Earth Day.
Earth Day celebrations continued in the Bronx.
The car-free event aimed to encourage New Yorkers to go car-free and open up space for celebration.
There was no shortage of music, dancing… and a lesson or two on how to juggle.
“It’s really just pulling people into each other,” said professional juggler Jacob Dyer. “Bringing people out of their shells.”
Dozens of districts participated in the event, which featured activities to promote sustainable development, healthy lifestyles and how to protect our earth.
Commissioner Idanis Rodriguez supported the effort.
“This is an example of how we want our city to learn, if we give it space and time for pedestrians and cyclists to use the street,” Rudgrewes said. “That’s how we want to divide the space.”
