UPPER WEST SIDE, Manhattan (WABC) — The man has been charged the killing of a 74-year-old woman in her Upper West Side apartment.

Police took Lashan Mackey, 47, into custody and charged him with the killing on Saturday. Police say he is a temporary worker at the building where Maria Hernandez lived.

Hernandez was killed Wednesday at her home on West 83rd Street. Someone took down the building’s surveillance cameras, making it difficult to figure out who was there.

Hernandez’s sister, Maria Terrero, discovered the victim during a well-being check. The two had just spent the evening with each other.

“She said good night, I said we’ll talk tomorrow if I see you tomorrow,” Terrero said.

Later Wednesday evening, Terrero received a call from the victim’s daughter.

“She said, ‘We keep calling my mom and she’s not answering the phone,’ and I said, ‘Well, I think that’s fine, but anyway, let me go and check on her,’ and that’s when I discovered situation,” Terrero said.

There were no signs of forced entry into the apartment, and police do not yet know if anything was taken.

“She was a wonderful person. A wonderful woman. She is kind, loving, caring, everything you can imagine, a kind, sweet person,” Terrero said.
