NEWARK, N.J. (WABC) — A hero’s salute was given when the second of two police officers shot and killed in Newark earlier this week was released from the hospital.

Fellow officers welcomed officer J. Aquino on Friday as he was being taken out of the University Hospital.

Aquino was shot in the shoulder Tuesday when Kendall Howard, 30, allegedly pulled a gun and shot two officers Tuesday afternoon outside a building on Van Velsor Place.

His partner was shot in the leg.

Eyewitness News cameras were there Wednesday afternoon when Aquino’s partner was released.

They were responding to a call that someone had spotted a suspect on the loose.

Howard is is now accused of attempting to kill two officers.
