TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — The Moon Event Venue on Lafayette Street has hosted many events over the years. On Sunday, it will be the place of the vice president’s visit.
Curtis Taylor, president and CEO of the Tallahassee Urban League, said Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Tallahassee will be inspirational for young women.
“As a woman, you have the opportunity to rise to the same level, and so you just need opportunity, education, faith, hard work, you can do it,” Taylor said.
NAACP Tallahassee Chapter President Mutaki Akbar hopes to be in the crowd to hear the vice president in person.
“I’m sure there will be a lot of excitement,” Akbar said. “I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of people trying to focus on the vice president.”
Akbar said Vice President Harris could have chosen anywhere to mark the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, but believes her visit to Tallahassee will send a far more important message in the national abortion debate.
“I think it sends a message to our government at the local level,” Akbar said. “I also think it’s important for our kids and everyone here in Tallahassee to see the vice president come here and define Tallahassee as the place to be.”
For security reasons, local law enforcement could not tell ABC27 about Vice President Harris’ visit.
So far, Governor DeSantis’ office has not released a statement about Harris’ visit. While the White House hasn’t confirmed a start time for the event, we’re told it could happen around mid-morning on Sunday.
