PERTH AMBOY, N.J. (WABC) — The Perth Amboy Public School District will hold its first board of education meeting since an 11-year-old student was stabbed.
The school district sent a letter to parents last week promising changes after the injury.
The district is making several recommendations to the board of education, including bringing in armed guards, metal detectors and searching backpacks.
Students at Perth Amboy High School walked out of class last Monday and another a protest action took place near the city hall.
While the stabbing happened off campus, authorities say it was the result of an altercation that happened earlier that day at the school.
Authorities say Smilein, 11, was was stabbed to death in Johnston Street last month as students walked home from Samuel Shull High School.
The victim’s father, Juan Jimenez, tells us his son was followed home and the attack was unprovoked.
Investigators say the suspect is also an 11-year-old boy. He is charged with juvenile delinquency and is being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center.
Jimenez says his son was stabbed twice in the stomach and underwent surgery.
The city administration, police department and school district issued a statement condemning the stabbing and said they continue to work together to prevent and respond to acts of violence involving anyone in the school district.
