NORTH LIDENHURST, Long Island (WABC) — Police responded to a small plane crash in the Long Island area.

The plane crashed near 5th Street and North Wellwood Avenue in Lindenhurst around 3:00 p.m. Sunday while coming in to land at Republic Airport in Farmingdale.

Wellwood Avenue North is closed between Colonia Road and Route 109.

The FAA says there were three people aboard the single-engine Piper PA 28.

The number of injured and dead is currently unknown.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of the crash.
