A man was fatally wounded after charging at a police officer at a Walmart store that had closed for the night, authorities in Indiana said.

Indiana State Police

About 15 minutes after a Walmart was closed to customersemployees reported that a “suspicious” man was still walking around the store, according to authorities in Indiana.

The man, later identified as a 30-year-old Corydon resident, refused to leave the store, police said. He also had “severe lacerations to the side of his neck.”

According to an Indiana State Police news release, officers from the Clarksville Police Department were called to Walmart around 11:15 pm on Monday, October 10th. Three officers who were already near the store “on a separate and unrelated investigation” responded immediately.

State detectives believe the man was brandishing a “machete-style knife” when he was approached by a Clarksville officer, authorities said. He then accused the police officer.

The officer shot him and police attempted to “save his life” by calling 911, the release said. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities said the lacerations to the man’s neck were likely self-inflicted.

Police said he grabbed a razor and a machete from Walmart before being asked to leave the store.

Indiana State Police are investigating at the request of the Clarksville Police Department. No Walmart officers or employees were injured.

Clarksville is located in southern Indiana, about 30 miles east of Coirdan in the Louisville metropolitan area.
