NEW YORK (WABC) – Test results have shown the presence of polio in some of New York City’s sewage.

The samples collected came from Brooklyn and Queens.

Preliminary test results have shown polio in sewage in Rockland, Orange, Sullivan and Nassau counties.

Authorities say there has been only one positive case of polio in New York.

This weekend, the state extended an order to protect New Yorkers against polio through vaccination.

Polio can lead to permanent paralysis of the arms and legs, and in some cases, death.
