A private plane with two people on board crashed into Lake Mead due to mechanical damage en route to North Las Vegas, officials in Nevada said.

The small plane landed in the lake around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, according to a news release from the National Park Service.

The single-engine Cessna 182 had left Grand Canyon Airport in Arizona about 90 minutes early, but reported mechanical problems before disappearing from the radar, according to KLAS.

National Park Service rescue boats and a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department helicopter responded to rescue the two people on board, the National Park Service said.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate. As a result of the wreck in the area of the Tsalinnaya basin of the lake, no one was injured.

Several bodies have been discovered in Lake Mead in recent months as the reservoir continues to shrink during droughts.
