CAPE CARAL, Florida – Gas prices continue to rise and are now at record highs.
A recent AAA report shows that gas prices in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Punta Gorda and Naples are now the highest ever.
Fort Myers and Cape Caral:
- The regular one costs $ 4.51
- Diesel costs $ 5.65.
Punta Gorda:
- Normal – 4.49
- Diesel costs $ 5.65
Naples:
- The regular one costs $ 4.57
- Diesel costs $ 5.68
Some drivers whose cars require premium gasoline may consider lowering the level to save extra money.
“You really don’t have a choice now that you come to the pumps and pay twice as much as you did a year ago,” said Veronica McPherson. “It really sucks.”
Fox 4 caught up with McPherson when she refueled her Chevrolet Camaro. With record high gasoline prices, she feels pressured when deciding what type of gas to smoke in her car. She said she was back to a cheaper option.
“Now I’m getting regular gasoline for my car, which really requires a premium, and it’s 4.59 for regular,” McPherson said. “And no, I’m not refueling today either.”
Prestige Automotive Diesel Tech company Keith McFarren said it’s not a very good idea.
“It happens that you get a pre-detonation or miss a fire or spray,” McFarren said. “The car will break down and it will also damage the engine.”
He added that if a driver used regular gas in his premium car, he should immediately stop using the low-level.
“I would just fill it with premium, what it should be, and everything will be clear,” said McFarren. “Don’t accelerate too much, move calmly.”
McPherson said her car still had no problems and that she definitely uses gas treatments.
“I’m worried about it, but like I said, I don’t have much choice,” McPherson said.
