RIKER’S ISLAND (WABC) – Three correctional officers have been charged with covering up the attack on a Rikers Island inmate by one of them.

Prosecutors said Carl Williams, 31, Roy Dewar, 58, and Jatan Das, 64, were charged with abuse of office and multiple counts of falsifying business records.

“We have to hold correctional officers to a high standard,” Bronx District Attorney Darcell Clark said. “These defendants breached the trust placed in them by allegedly filing false documents about an officer assaulting a prisoner. Just as the alleged violence will not be tolerated, neither will the cover-up be tolerated, especially during this tumultuous time at Rikers Island.”

Surveillance video shows Williams walk into the living area of the Otis Bantum Correctional Center and begin talking to one of the inmates, who was standing with his hands on his sides, according to the DA’s office.

Williams then punched the man in the face and then took a “fighting stance,” according to prosecutors.

Dewar and Das allegedly watched the assault on video and filed a false report saying the inmate was aggressive and force was necessary.
