A convoy of trucks crossed the Sanibel Dam Tuesday afternoon as Gov. Ron DeSantis announced the road would be open to traffic.

DeSantis said the dam will be open for civilian use on Oct. 21.

Trucks began moving over the levee ahead of schedule, DeSantis said, adding that it was scheduled to open by 3 p.m.

“After the convoy goes, they have to continue some repair work,” DeSantis said. “He will not be ready for a permanent civil movement.”

The column included about 200 truck towers and two tractor-trailers and much more.

DeSantis was joined by Florida Department of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie and Florida Transportation Secretary Jared Perdue.

The Punta Rassa Condominiums press conference began at 12:30 p.m
