Special eyewitness news: Seeking refuge in New York

NEW YORK (WABC) – An estimated 17,000 asylum seekers have arrived in New York, with tens of thousands more expected to arrive in the coming months.

The United Way of New York says 75% come into the city’s shelter system, and 30% of those are families. The share of newly arrived families is expected to increase.

Many people arrive at the Port Authority with only the clothes on their backs, and some of them are incredibly frail.

United Way established the Emergency and Community Needs Fund to provide resources to local organizations working with newly arrived asylum seekers.

In our special Eyewitness News: Seeking Asylum in New York, we take a closer look at the growing number of asylum seekers, the huge challenge of finding shelter for everyone, the greatest needs they face now and how you can help.
