FORT MYERS BEACH

While several coastal businesses have reopened after Hurricane Yang, one is facing more challenges than others.

The September 28 storm devastated Fort Myers Beach’s shrimp industry. The two largest companies, Trico Shrimp Company and Erickson and Jensen, found after the storm that all but one of their shrimp boats had been washed ashore by the storm surge.

Of the 43 shrimp boats that ran aground in the storm, only one was refloated in seven weeks. It took about six weeks for the barge and the necessary crane to arrive.
