Tallahassee, Florida (AP) – Women will have to wait 24 hours before having an abortion at the discretion of a Florida judge in a nearly seven-year struggle over the waiting period.

District Attorney Angela Dempsey in Tallahassee dismissed the lawsuit filed on behalf of Gainesville Women’s Clinic, saying other medical procedures have a similar waiting period, and other important decisions such as marriage, divorce and gun purchases have a longer waiting period.

She said 24 hours is the minimum time to allow a woman to consider a decision after consulting a doctor.

Former Gov. and current U.S. Sen. Rick Scott signed the bill in 2015, and it was immediately challenged.
