The U.S. Capitol was briefly evacuated Wednesday night after police said it was tracking a plane “posing a potential threat,” but the plane turned out to be military, from which people took off with parachutes for a demonstration, the Associated Press reported.
An announcement of the Capitol evacuation was received shortly after 6:30 p.m.
The plane, a single-engine plane, was reportedly circling Washington after taking off from the combined Andrews base in Maryland, two people familiar with the matter. People said that the plane did not report takeoff and did not have the appropriate permission. People were not authorized to discuss the issue publicly and spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
The plane was carrying members of the Golden Knights of the U.S. Army, who then parachuted to the Washington Nationals Baseball Stadium to demonstrate before the game. The national park is just over a mile from the US Capitol.
