The bridge is closed after it was deemed too dangerous to drive on. It takes place on the West Winterberry Bridge on Marco Island. Traffic of vehicles, bicycles and pedestrians is prohibited on it.
Closure is to prevent something worse from happening. Marco Island city officials say the bridge is in danger of collapsing, so the Florida Department of Transportation has closed it immediately. Barricades went up, blocking the busy bridge.
“It’s just going to have to go the other way from now on, you know? It’s better to be safe than sorry,” said Rose Kramer. “I didn’t realize it was so dangerous. I actually go through it literally every day, so I mean, I’m scared that I traveled on it, and it’s dangerous.”
The city claims the bridge’s post-tensioning system, which strengthens the concrete, has weakened. The closure is already affecting traffic in the area.
Bob Trevorgy lives near the bridge. His concern is movement on water. “If you look at the map of the island, there must be hundreds of boats here and this is the only way out. It’s the only choice.”
The closure has islanders worried about how long it could last.
“It’s going to be tough because it’s the season, so there’s a lot more people on the island and there’s only a few main roads to get to places,” Kramer said.
Neighbors in the area say that many people drive over this bridge, and not only cars.
If you are using this bridge, you should plan an alternate route for now. The city has not yet announced how long the repairs will take.
