A North Carolina man faces charges after a college student died in a car crash, police say.

The crash happened shortly after midnight Saturday, Oct. 1, when a Jeep Wrangler with three people inside was driving recklessly in the parking lot of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, according to a news release from the UNCW Police Department.

One of the passengers, Howard Lashon Coleman II, was killed, police said.

The driver of the Jeep, Nicholas Henry Polman, 19, was charged with involuntary manslaughter, impaired driving and driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the release. He is not a student at UNCW, the school told McClatchy News.

Police did not say whether the other passenger was injured.

Coleman, 20, was a sophomore at UNCW majoring in computer science, according to an email from UNCW sent to the student body. He was a native of Troutman, North Carolina.

Family and friends shared tributes on social media following Coleman’s death.

“We just devastated,” one Facebook user commented. “Sean ALWAYS made it a point to visit me whenever he was in town and ALWAYS text to make sure I was okay. I hope he knows how much I love him. ALL of our hearts are just broken.”

“I am devastated!! I hate it so much I will never be right again, this is too much,” said another Facebook comment.

The incident is under investigation, according to the police.
