NEW YORK (WABC) – A year ago this month, a horrific fire claimed the lives of 17 people, including 8 children, in a large apartment complex in the Bronx.

It was a perfect flurry of fire safety mistakes. A perfect storm with deadly consequences.

Defective heater. The door was left open where the fire started as residents fled. Other residents of the floors above, instead of staying in their apartments, ran out and encountered the flames and smoke that killed them.

Additionally, approximately 1,400 businesses sell marijuana in New York State, but only one is licensed to sell recreational marijuana. The Second Coming is this week. Now is the push to crack down on these businesses. But the question arises – why are licenses issued for so long?

We ask a senior official at the New York Office of Cannabis Management.
