USMNT Stock Watch: Gio Renya, Antonee Robinson return from injury

Editor’s note: “Jet to Qatar” is a weekly feature on FOX Sports that tracks the progress of players hoping to crack the United States The composition of the men’s national team consists of 26 players World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

Let’s start with the good news.

Five Americans bound for the World Cup have returned from injuries in recent days, including a teenage striker Gio Reinawho came on for the last 19 minutes Borussia Dortmund Champions League draws with Seville on Tuesday.

M Tyler Adams (Leeds): The tireless holding midfielder has played every minute for Leeds and has been the club’s most consistent player over the course of nine games. Both Berhalter and his US fans should pray that Adams stays healthy despite this workload.

D Serginho Dest (Milan): The USMNT’s starting right back has been slow to settle in Italy. Dest has started just one of eight games in all competitions for Milan, although he did come off the bench in the first half of the Rossoneri’s 2-0 Champions League defeat by Chelsea on Tuesday.

F Jesus Ferreira (Dallas): The diminutive forward finished the MLS regular season with 18 goals, tied with Cincinnati Brandon Vasquez for most among American players. Ferreira scored FCD’s winner on Decision Day Sporting Kansas City.

M Weston McKenney (Juventus): Three days after coming on at half-time in Juve’s 1-0 loss to AC Milan, McKenney was sent off in Tuesday’s shock 2-0 defeat at Maccabi Haifa – a defeat that almost eliminated them from Champions League.

M Yunus Musa (Valencia): The teenage midfielder was unable to make a quick return after a groin injury ruled him out of last month’s friendlies after the Americans struggled so desperately without him. Moussa played the last 28 minutes of last Friday’s 2-1 win Asasunahis first action since September 10.

F Christian Pulisic (Chelsea): Pulisic’s fit season continues. After killing his well taken goal on Saturday he did not play at all in Milan.

F/M Giovanni Reina (Borussia Dortmund): The 19-year-old is back after missing three games for BVB with a groin strain he picked up against Saudi Arabia September 27.

D Anthony Robinson (Fulham): Having been sidelined since the start of September with a high ankle sprain, Jeddai made his first appearance in over a month on Sunday, playing the full 90 minutes at left-back as the Cottagers lost 3-1 to the London rivals West Ham.

F Tim Weah (Lille): After missing the first 10 games in Ligue 1, the winger played the last 16 minutes of Lille’s 1-0 win on Sunday against Lens.

D Walker Zimmerman (Nashville): The starting American centre-back was in play-off form against the Supporters Shield winners on Decision Day, helping LAFC keep a clean sheet. Nashville faces the LA Galaxy this weekend in a win-or-go game.

Comfort is a plus

M Kelly Acosta (LAFC): Adams’ backup played in 32 of 34 regular-season games, starting 28 – including Sunday’s loss to Zimmerman & Co. After a first-round bye, LAFC will face either Nashville or the rival Galaxy in the Western Conference Semifinals.

M Paul Arriola (Dallas): Arriola had a goal and an assist in FCD’s win over SKC. The veteran winger’s goal was the winner:

D Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic): Carter-Vickers returned from injury to captain the Bhoys to a Scottish Premiership win over St Johnstone on Saturday. On Tuesday, he helped save RB Leipzig in 75 minutes before the Germans scored twice to knock Celtic out of the Champions League.

*D Reggie Cannon (Baoist): The right-back/right centre-back missed his second straight club games with a groin injury he picked up on 23 September against Japan.

M Luca de la Torre (Celta Vigo): Playmaker De la Torre did not feature in Sunday’s loss to Barcelona. It was the fourth time in eight La Liga games that he did not come off the bench. In 2022-2023, the 24-year-old player registered just 38 minutes.

G Shawn Johnson (New York): The 33-year-old has powered the Doves into a season that ended with a 2-1 win over Atlanta United on Sunday. NYCFC hosts Miami on Oct. 17 (7 p.m. ET, FS1/FOX Deportes/FOX Sports app) in the first round of the playoffs.

D Aaron Long (New York Red Bulls): In his first action since playing 58 minutes for Team USA against Saudi Arabia, Long went the distance for the Red Bulls in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Charlotte.

M Jordan Morris (Seattle Sounders): The physical winger was replaced midway through 2022 as the Sounders drew 1-1 against San Jose for “precautionary reasons,” according to Seattle coach Brian Schmetzer. “He’s fine,” Schmetzer said of the 27-year-old. Morris will next report to the October USMNT training camp, to be announced.

F Ricardo Pepi (Groningen): The Texan’s confidence should kill after he scored twice last Friday. Pepy, 19, now has four goals and an assist in four games since arriving in the Netherlands on loan from German Bundesliga club Augsburg.

*D Chris Richards (Crystal Palace): The 22-year-old centre-back has not played since August and remains sidelined with an undisclosed injury. The door closes quickly.

F Josh Sargent (Norwich City): Sargent scored his seventh goal in his last 10 games for the Canaries in Saturday’s 3-2 win over Preston.

D Joe Scully (Borussia Monchengladbach): “Gladbach manager Daniel Farke stuck with the teenage right-back after last week’s embarrassing 5-1 defeat Werder Bremen. Scully – who has started every game this season – rewarded Farke with a brace against Cologne in a 5-2 derby win.

G Zach Steffen (Middlesbrough): Steffen has been better in Boro’s last two games. On October 5, he recorded his first win of the season, making two key saves and keeping a scoreless against Birmingham City. He made five stops in the subsequent 2-0 defeat at Millwall.

G Matt Turner (Arsenal): The Gunners’ No.2 earned his first Arsenal shutout in last week’s 3-0 home win over Bode/Bliss in the Europa League. Turner is expected to start Thursday’s rematch in Norway.

D DeAndre Yedlin (Miami): The 32-year-old right back played in all 34 games for Miami, starting 33 times. He will surpass the 3,000-minute mark in the first game of the playoffs next week.

Waiting list

M Johnny Cardoza (International): The Brazilian number 8 remains on the dark horse list should another central midfielder opt out.

G Ethan Horvath (Luton Town): Still in contention to become the USMNT’s third-choice goalkeeper for Qatar, Horvath picked up his fifth shutout of the season over the weekend.

D Mark McKenzie (Genk): The central defender started nine times in a row in Belgium second best team. He is the most likely replacement if Richards can’t go.

D Eric Palmer-Brown (Troy): Palmer-Brown had a rough Sunday. The central defender was beaten further Nice opening, then missed a penalty before being taken off at half-time in a 3-2 defeat.

F Jordan Pefock (Berlin Union): Substituted after 65 minutes, the centre-forward made his second shortest change of the Bundesliga season in Sunday’s win over Stuttgart. After a hot start, Pefok scored one goal in his last five matches.

M Christian Roldan (Seattle Sounders): Roldan went the distance in the Sounders final. He will join teammate Morris in the October camp and should fight for a trip to the World Cup until the end.

M Malik Tillman (Rangers): When Liverpool visit Glasgow in the Champions League on Wednesday, the American staff will be keeping a close eye on the 20-year-old’s campaign – if he plays.

D Sam Vines (Royal Antwerp): As the only natural left-back after Robinson, Vines, who remains in good form for the Belgian front-runner, still has a chance.

F Hadji Wright (Antalyaspor): Wright is now scoreless in four matches in the Turkish Premier League; The striker scored the last goal on August 26.
