According to police in North Carolina, a man who tried to break into a house left behind a severed finger in a glove.

The finger led investigators to Vernon Forrest Wilson, 67, who was charged with multiple charges, including first-degree burglary, according to a news release from the Burlington Police Department.

Officers responded to an “attempted home invasion” around 7 a.m. Oct. 6 in Burlington, about 60 miles northwest of Raleigh, the release said.

According to police, the occupant of the home went outside to start a car in the driveway and was returning inside when an armed stranger approached.

A stranger tried to get into the house, a fight broke out at the door. The stranger’s weapon fired at one point, and the bullet hit the resident in the chest, the release said. The resident was not seriously injured and was able to close the door.

Investigators later found a glove at the scene with a severed finger inside. They believed the glove belonged to the man who tried to break into the home, and they used the finger to identify him as Wilson, the release said.

Police say Wilson’s finger was likely severed when the resident forced the door shut on his hand.

Wilson is also charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill causing serious bodily injury, police said. His bail is set at $250,000.
