Oktoberfest in Cape Coral is canceled

THE KING OF CAPE

The German-American Social Club announced Wednesday morning that the 2022 Oktoberfest is being canceled.

“First, we recognize that our club is located in a federally declared disaster area and that our local infrastructure cannot support such activities while providing for the extensive relief and recovery efforts that are expected to extend far beyond this month,” the club wrote in a press release.

The club continues to say that this is a time of “grieving and sympathy for the survivors” rather than celebration, and that club members have suffered self-inflicted damage and the ongoing long-term loss of utility services, making it financially impossible to prepare for and hold the event.

“Thank you for your understanding and patience,” the statement concluded. “God bless the recovery of all of Southwest Florida as we strive to build strength together.”

Event organizers told WINK News that the entire building is still without power and they are not sure when it will be back on.

There is not enough time to fully prepare for Oktoberfest.

The annual festival usually takes place in the last two weeks of October. The local festivities, which originate from Munich, bring authentic German food, beer and games for families.

Sandra Meeks, who moved to Cape Coral from Germany in 2016, said she was disappointed. It’s a tradition for her family.
