A Mississippi community is outraged after 15-year-old Jahaim McMillan died after being shot by the Gulfport Police Department.
According to court documents received by WLOXOn Thursday, Oct. 6, Jahaim McMillin and four other teenagers were approached by police after a call came in saying a Kia Soul was driving recklessly, rolled down their window and “rolled them over.”
The documents also state that “the caller and his passenger said they saw the right rear passenger in the Kia Soul brandishing a firearm” at a red light and wearing a “camouflage ski mask” and pointing a gun at them. As a result, the caller was able to lose the Kia Soul.
A short time later, police spotted a Kia Soul matching the caller’s description in the Family Dollar parking lot.
According to police, the officer approached the “armed” suspect, McMillin, which led to shots being fired by the officer. McMillan was shot in the head and taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
An eyewitness tells about what happened
Eyewitness accounts of the incident contradict police reports. A woman named Deborah Stout said she did not see McMillin with a gun and his hands were up when he was shot.
I saw a policeman shoot a guy. I didn’t see a gun on him, she said. He was leaving the store with his hands up. I just stopped by and saw what happened.
Mary Spyvery, Kion Bell’s mother and one of the teenagers in the car with McMillan, said her son told her that McMillan did not have a gun.
I said, “So why did they say Jaheim had a gun?” Spivery said. He said, “Mom, Jaheim didn’t have a gun.
Soon the call ended.
Four friends with McMillan were arrested and charged with aggravated assault and held on $500,000 bail. It is also reported that weapons were confiscated.
