Risks to the safety of emergency and rescue services as a result of the ignition of lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) investigated three electric vehicle accidents that resulted in post-crash fires and one non-accident fire involving an electric vehicle, all of which illustrate the risk to emergency responders posed by high-voltage lithium-ion batteries vehicles.
The NTSB also examined national and international standards created to maximize the safety of electric vehicles. Particular attention was paid to emergency instructions provided by vehicle manufacturers to reduce safety risks for first and second responders dealing with electric vehicle accidents and high-voltage lithium-ion battery fires.
Fires in electric vehicles powered by high-voltage lithium-ion batteries pose a risk of electric shock.
