An 84-year-old man was rescued from a boardwalk after his dog returned home without him, authorities in Massachusetts said.

A man who has ‘mobility problems’ and uses a cane, fell 20 feet down an embankment and “screamed for help for hours” on Monday, Oct. 3, the Northampton Police Department said on Facebook.

According to police, the man was out walking his dog around 6:30 p.m. and usually returns to his home on South Street within half an hour.

This time, “however, the dog returned home with the leash in tow, except for the owner,” according to police.

The man’s wife called police to help find him, officials said.

Officers found the man “within minutes” of searching the area, police said.

With the help of Northampton Fire Rescue, officers rescued the man, who was taken to hospital with “minor injuries”, police said.

Northampton is about 20 miles north of Springfield.
