Billy EichnerThe new romcom completely bombed at the box office — and it seems he’s blaming it on homophobia across the country.
The comedian-turned-actor took to Twitter on Sunday to acknowledge poor box office sales — the film grossed just $4.8 million domestically, coming in at No. 4 this weekend — and he’s clearly upset by the turnout … despite on the fact that the film is objectively strong.
Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold out theater where the BROS were playing in Los Angeles. The audience howled with laughter from beginning to end, burst into applause at the end, and some wiped away tears as they left. It was truly magical. Indeed. I am VERY proud of this movie.

BE also claimed that despite Brothers being hailed as one of the funniest comedies of recent times, a cinema chain called Universal said it was pulling the trailer due to its gay content. He says that Universal was able to convince them to keep it.
It’s just the world we live in, unfortunately. Despite rave reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just weren’t showing up for Bros. And it’s disappointing, but that’s the way it is.

His last thought hits his head… “Anyone who is NOT a homophobic queer should go see BROS tonight! You’re going to be blown away! And it *is* special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on the big screen, especially for queer people , who don’t often get that chance. I really like this movie. SORRY BROTHERS!!!”
Billy is right about one thing … the film was well received by critics and standards – so by all accounts it’s pretty darn good. As to why it turned out so badly, it’s hard to say. The studio marketed it pretty heavily…the trailer was shown frequently in theaters and on billboards all over Los Angeles.
It’s pretty clear though… Billy thinks it’s lingering bigotry. 🤷🏽♂️
