John Legend got a taste of his own medicine on The Voice after the Washington native took over as his coach.

Trainers Blake Shelton and Legend battled in the hope that 22-year-old Jaden Luke will be chosen to join their team after first listening to Bread’s ‘Make It with You’.

The trainers joked that in the past Legend didn’t pick Luke to open one of their shows.

“I was going to open up to you, but you didn’t choose me!” Luke said after Legend praised him.

According to his website, Luke has opened for artists such as Chris Isaak and Little Feat. He often compared to musical stylizations Ed Sheeran and John Mayer.

Shelton was the first to turn his chair around as the crowd grew louder, loving Luke’s performance. Camila Cabela jokingly pressed the horn, but since she and Gwen Stefani were already on their teams, they couldn’t turn around.

“I couldn’t push the button, my team is full and I’m devastated because I love this song so much and I don’t understand why you even know this song?” Stephanie said after the resident of Bothell, Washington finished his blind audition.

Luke credited his mother for being raised around the music of the 50s, 60s and 70s.

“It would be an honor to be the last man on my team,” Shelton told Luke.

In the end, Luke chose Shelton after giving a shout-out to his mom and sister, who were watching from the sidelines.

After Luke’s blind audition, three of the four coaches formed their teams for Season 22, leaving Legend with one spot.

Bothell is about 20 miles northeast of Seattle.
